Not All Unconscious Bias Training is Effective

Not All Unconscious Bias Training is Effective

Companies are embracing unconscious bias training as they work towards cultivating a diverse and inclusive culture. But not all training is effective. Studies have shown that when training makes people defensive, they avoid individuals different from themselves because they fear they will be labelled biased, making the situation worse. Our training approach is to explore how everyone has biases in a nonjudgmental manner. We help participants understand the most common types of biases and how they show up in the work place. We work with participant to recognize their own blind spots and outline strategies to respond to when they witness bias in own and others’ behaviors or personally experience the consequence of bias. We explore avenues that companies can take to create healthy business norms and talent management practices that reduce the impact of unconscious bias.
